Terracycle

Quirky but Fierce is proud to help facilitate Terracycling in Northern Ireland by being a collection point in Ballynahinch. Vicky Seviour and her team of volunteers have pioneered making the most of this alternative recycling scheme in Northern Ireland since 2016.

What is Terracycle?

There are lots of niche products, materials and items that are too complicated or too costly to be recycled via kerbside collections or at recycle sites.

TerraCycle® is a social enterprise Eliminating the Idea of Waste®. They are in 21 countries recycle typically non-recyclable items through national, first-of-their-kind recycling platforms.

While reducing plastic consumption overall is best, Terracycle helps keep plastic out of landfill and facilitates it being made into new products. “Products may include outdoor furniture and decking, plastic shipping pallets, watering cans, storage containers and bins, tubes for construction applications, flooring tiles, playground surface covers and athletic fields, and much more.”

Terracycle for Charity

Even better, we are able to raise funds in aid of the charity Kicks Count, formerly Count The Kicks, which aims to educate women about baby movements to reduce stillbirths and neonatal deaths.

This group is run by Vicky Seviour to raise funds for Kicks Count but is not associated with them in any way. For more information or advice on movements please contact www.facebook.com/ukcountthekicks.

Vicky has organized for collection points all around Northern Ireland to help as many participate as possible. She and a crew of amazing volunteers regularly collect, sort, pack, and ship the recycling to Terracycle. So far, Vicky and her team have raised £9227.62 (as of 19 July 2021). Amazing!

How do I package my Terracycling?

  1. Decide what items you are going to save, and how you are going to sort and store it.

  2. When you have enough to fill a bread bag or cereal bag, you can take to your local drop off.

  3. Each programme needs to go in a separate bag. So crisp/nut/popcorn/pretzel packets all go into a bread bag together, cheese packaging goes into its own bag, etc. Presorting is essential to help Vicky and her crew!
